PREAMBLE

“Fatara” means “to create out of nothingness”.  However, our Royal conspirators of the early Islamic period, exercising their evil designs, interpreted most of the Quranic terminology with their negative frame of mind and proclaimed disaster and destruction coming out of it wherever it was possible for them to do so.  So, they preferred to translate the word “infatarat” as “cleft asunder”.  Similarly, the creation of celestial bodies was defined as “obscuring or moving away of stars” and then the gloomy but illogical reference to the “graves being overturned” is yet another example of their negative aims and targets!!!

Without resorting to any more criticism, let us move on to our fresh and rational translation of these divine injunctions which reflect, contrary to destruction, demolition and terror, an awe-inspiring peace, harmony and great order in the act of creation. Let us maintain our emphasis on the true light of the Quran aiming at the great destination of man as appointed by the Creator and the constant chain of guidance from Him which helps and facilitates mankind with every breath of its life to secure a high status in the Hereafter.

 

Chapter Al-Infataar (82)

إِذَا السَّمَاءُ انفَطَرَتْ ﴿١﴾ وَإِذَا الْكَوَاكِبُ انتَثَرَتْ ﴿٢﴾ وَإِذَا الْبِحَارُ فُجِّرَتْ ﴿٣﴾ وَإِذَا الْقُبُورُ بُعْثِرَتْ ﴿٤﴾ عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٌ مَّا قَدَّمَتْ وَأَخَّرَتْ ﴿٥﴾ يَا أَيُّهَا الْإِنسَانُ مَا غَرَّكَ بِرَبِّكَ الْكَرِيمِ﴿٦﴾ الَّذِي خَلَقَكَ فَسَوَّاكَ فَعَدَلَكَ ﴿٧﴾ فِي أَيِّ صُورَةٍ مَّا شَاءَ رَكَّبَكَ ﴿٨﴾ كَلَّا بَلْ تُكَذِّبُونَ بِالدِّينِ ﴿٩﴾ وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكُمْ لَحَافِظِينَ ﴿١٠﴾ كِرَامًا كَاتِبِينَ ﴿١١﴾ يَعْلَمُونَ مَا تَفْعَلُونَ ﴿١٢﴾إِنَّ الْأَبْرَارَ لَفِي نَعِيمٍ ﴿١٣﴾ وَإِنَّ الْفُجَّارَ لَفِي جَحِيمٍ ﴿١٤﴾يَصْلَوْنَهَا يَوْمَ الدِّينِ ﴿١٥﴾ وَمَا هُمْ عَنْهَا بِغَائِبِينَ ﴿١٦﴾ وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا يَوْمُ الدِّينِ ﴿١٧﴾ ثُمَّ مَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا يَوْمُ الدِّينِ ﴿١٨﴾ يَوْمَ لَا تَمْلِكُ نَفْسٌ لِّنَفْسٍ شَيْئًا ۖ وَالْأَمْرُ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِّلَّـهِ ﴿١٩﴾
Transliteration: “Izas-Samaa-un-fatarat; wa izal-kawaakib-un-tatharat; wa izal-bihaaru fujjirat; wa izal-qubooru bu’thirat; ‘alimat nafsun maa qaddamat wa ukhkharat. Yaa ayyuhal-Insaanu maa gharraka bi-Rabbik-al-Kareem; allazi khalaqaka, fa-sawwaaka,fa-‘adalaka; fi ayyi sooratin maa shaa’a rakkabak. Kalla, bal tukazzaboona bid-Deen, wa inna ‘alayi-kum la-haafizeen; kiraaman kaatibeen; ya’lamoon maa taf’aloon. Innal-Abraara la-fi na’eem; wa innal-fujjaara la-fi Jaheem; yaslawna-ha youm-ad-Deen. Wamaa hum ‘un-haa bi-ghaaibeen. Wa maa adraaka maa youm-ud-Deen. Thumma maa adraaka maa youm-ud-Deen? Youma laa tumliku nafsun li-nafsin shayi’an, wal-amaru youma’izin lilaah.”

 

Traditional Translation:

“WHEN THE SKY is cleft asunder, and when the stars are scattered, and when the seas burst beyond their bounds, and when the graves are overturned – every human being will [at last] comprehend, what he has sent ahead and what he has held back [in this world]. O MAN! What is it that lures thee away from thy bountiful Sustainer, who has created thee, and formed thee in accordance with what thou art meant' to be, and shaped thy nature in just proportions, having put thee together in whatever form He willed [thee to have]? Nay, [O men,] but you [are lured away from God whenever you are tempted to] give the lie to [God’s] Judgment! And yet, verily, there are ever-watchful forces over you, noble, recording, aware of whatever you do! Behold, [in the life to come] the truly virtuous: will indeed be in bliss, whereas, behold, the wicked will indeed be in a blazing fire – [a fire] which they shall enter on Judgment Day, and which they shall not [be able to] evade. And what could make thee conceive what that Judgment Day will be? And once again: What could make thee conceive what that Judgment Day will be? [It will be] a Day when no human being shall be of the least avail to another human being: for on that Day [it will become manifest that] all sovereignty is God's alone.”

 

 

The latest Academic & Rational Translation:

When the Universe has been created out of nothingness (anfatarat – انفطرت), and when the shining and gleaming celestial bodies (al-Kwakab – الکواکب) have scattered all over its space (antatharat – انتثرت), and when lands inhabited by people (al-bihaar – البِحار) have become abundant (fujjirat – فُجِّرت), and when all that lies buried and hidden (al-quboor – القبور) has been exposed (bu’thirat – بعثرت), by that time every conscious soul (nafsun –نفس) will have known all it has sent ahead for the next phase of life (qaddamat – قدّمت) and that which it has withheld. Therefore, O Mankind, what has deceived/misguided you (gharraka – غرّک) about your Exalted Sustainer Who has created you, then put you in the right state (sawwaka – سوّاک), and then adjusted you properly to the right magnitude (‘adalaka- عدلک) and then evolved you into whatever format he willed. It shouldn’t be so (kallaa – کلّا) that you dare to deny the authenticity of the System He has proposed (ad-Deen – الدّین), while there are compulsory safeguards appointed upon you, just like much valued informers (kiraman kaatibeen – کراما کاتبین) who remain watchful of all that you are doing. Verily, the righteous ones will certainly be in blessings; and indeed the wicked ones will certainly be in the fire of remorse where they will be placed on the day the Divine system is enforced (youm-ud-Deen – یوم الدین); and they cannot escape that eventuality. And what would explain to you as to what is the stage of enforcement of Divine System/Discipline? Again, how would you know what is that stage of enforcement of Divine System/Discipline? It is that stage/time/era when no soul would be able to exercise authority over another soul. And all authority on that stage would be reserved exclusively for Allah, the Absolute sovereign power”.

Fatara : فطر: انفطار: fatr, split, cleave; begin, do first or for the first time, open a road; create out of nothing, fail to leaven the dough, bake unleavened bread from haste. INF., fatr, future, pierce through, break the fast. Fitrat: creation, natural disposition, quality, make, creative power; alms, sacrifice; mass, host; prudence, cunning, the created beings.

Kaf-Waw-Kaf-Ba (Kaf-Alif-Kaf-Ba) : کواکب= To shine, glisten. Planets.

ب ح ر Ba-Ha-Ra =Slit, cut, divide lengthwise, split, enlarge or make wide
A vast expanse of water (Ocean, sea, huge river)
A fleet swift horse called because of its speed like the rolling of the waves in the sea
A generous man who is ample in his generosity
Wide tract of land, land belonging to or inhabited by people
Any town, village or city that has a running river or a body of water
Low or depressed land; A large meadow or garden; A place where water stagnates
Seaman, sailor

ف ج ر : Fa-Jiim-Ra = cut/divide lengthwise, break open, vent, incline/decline/deviate, dawn/sunrise/daybreak, source, abundantly and suddenly, ample bounty/generosity, a place from which water flows.

Gh-Ra-Ra = deceived, beguiled, inexperienced or ignorant in affairs, act childish, exposed to perdition or destruction without knowing, danger, hazard; deficiency of, imperfect performance of; vain things, vanities

 

Ba-Ayn-Tha-Ra: بعثر : بُعثرت = scatter abroad, turn upside down, to overthrow.

Siin-Waw-Ya: س و ی: سوّاک = to be worth, equivalent to. sawwa - to level, complete, arrange, make uniform, even, congruous, consistent in parts, fashion in a suitable manner, make adapted to the exigencies or requirements, perfect a thing, put a thing into a right or good state. istawa - to establish, become firm or firmly settled, turn to a thing, to direct one's attention to a thing, mount. ala sawain - on terms of equality, i.e. in such a manner that each party should know that it is free of its obligations, at par. sawiyyun -even, right, sound in mind and body. sawiyyan - being in sound health.

Ayn-Dal-Lam: ع د ل: عدلک = to act and deal justly, equitably, with fairness and proportion, adjust properly as to relative magnitude, establish justice, hold as equal, pay as an aquivalent, dispose aright, straighten, deviate from the right path, turn aside, stray from. adlun - justice, equity, accuracy, recompense, ransom, equivalent, compensation, instead (thereof).

د ي ن : = Dal-Ya-Nun = obedience/submissiveness, servility, religion, high/elevated/noble/glorious rank/condition/state, took/receive a loan or borrowed upon credit, become indebted, in debt, under the obligation of a debt, contract a debt, repay/reimburse a loan, rule/govern/manage it, possess/own it, become habituated/accustomed to something, confirmation, death (because it is a debt everyone must pay), a particular law/statute, system, custom/habit/business, a way/course/manner of conduct/acting, repayment/compensation.

"فطر" کا ایک مستند معنی ہے "عدم سے وجود میں لانا/تخلیق کرنا"۔ تاہم ابتدائی اسلامی دور کے ہمارے درباری سازشیوں نے اپنے شیطانی اہداف کی پیروی کرتے ہوئے اپنی تفاسیر میں قرآن کے زیادہ تر ذخیرہِ الفاظ کو منفی رنگ دینے کی روش اختیار کی اور جہاں جہاں بھی ممکن تھا ان الفا ظ سے تباہی اور بربادی کا عمل تعبیر کرنے کی کوشش کرتے رہے۔ اسی روش کے مطابق انہوں نے لفظ "انفطرت" کا ترجمہ بھی "پھٹ کر ٹکڑے ٹکڑے ہو جانا" کیا۔ اور اسی کی مانند خلائی کرّوں کی "تخلیق اور لا محدود پھیلاو" کو "ستاروں کا معدوم ہو جانا" سے تعبیر کیا۔ اور پھر خوفزدہ کرنے والا فقرہ "قبروں کا اُلٹ دیا جانا" وغیرہ بھی اسی رویےکی ایک اور مثال ہے۔
نکتہ چینی کے سلسلے کو آگے نہ بڑھاتے ہوئے، آئیے براہ راست ان الہامی فرمودات کے اپنے انتہائی عقلیت پرمبنی جدید ترین ترجمے کی جانب توجہ کرتے ہیں جو، بربادیوں، تباہ کاریوں اورقبروں کے دہشناک تذکروں کےبرعکس، تخلیق کے عظیم عمل میں پروردگارِ عالم کے ایک بصیرت افروز، پُرامن، ہم آہنگ اور مربوط تعمیری نظام کی عکاسی کرتا ہے ۔ ہمیں تمام زور قرآن کی سچی روشنی کی دریافت پردینا ہے جس کا ہدف انسان کی وہ شاندار منزلِ مقصود ہے جو خالق کی متعین کردہ ہے۔ اور جس میں اُس عظیم ہستی کی جانب سے مسلسل راہنمائی کا ایک ایسا تواتر موجود ہےجو انسان کو حیاتِ آخرت میں ایک بلند مقام حاصل کرنے میں اس کی زندگی کی ہر سانس کے ساتھ مدد و استعانت فراہم کرتا ہے۔

"جب آسمان پھٹ جائے گا اور جب تارے بکھر جائیں گے اور جب سمندر پھاڑ دیے جائیں گے اور جب قبریں کھول دی جائیں گی اُس وقت ہر شخص کو اُس کا اگلا پچھلا سب کیا دھرا معلوم ہو جائے گا اے انسان، کس چیز نے تجھے اپنے اُس رب کریم کی طرف سے دھوکے میں ڈال دیا جس نے تجھے پیدا کیا، تجھے نک سک سے درست کیا، تجھے متناسب بنایا اور جس صورت میں چاہا تجھ کو جوڑ کر تیار کیا؟ ہرگز نہیں، بلکہ (اصل بات یہ ہے کہ) تم لوگ جزا و سزا کو جھٹلاتے ہو حالانکہ تم پر نگراں مقرر ہیں ایسے معزز کاتب جو تمہارے ہر فعل کو جانتے ہیں یقیناً نیک لوگ مزے میں ہوں گے اور بے شک بدکار لوگ جہنم میں جائیں گے جزا کے دن وہ اس میں داخل ہوں گے اور اُس سے ہرگز غائب نہ ہو سکیں گے اور تم کیا جانتے ہو کہ وہ جزا کا دن کیا ہے؟ ہاں، تمہیں کیا خبر کہ وہ جزا کا دن کیا ہے؟ یہ وہ دن ہے جب کسی شخص کے لیے کچھ کرنا کسی کے بس میں نہ ہوگا، فیصلہ اُس دن بالکل اللہ کے اختیار میں ہوگا۔"

جب کائنات عدم سے وجود میں آ چکی ہوگی [انفطرت] اور چمکتے ہوئے روشن کُرے [الکواکب] خلاوں میں ہر طرف پھیل چکے ہوں گے ]انتثرت]؛ اور زمینیں لوگوں سے آباد ہو کر [البحارُ] کثرت سے پھیل چکی ہوں گی [فُجّرت]؛ اور جب جو کچھ زمین میں دفن اور مخفی ہے [القبورُ]، اُلٹ کر باہرآ چکا یعنی منکشف ہو چکا ہوگا [بعثرت]، تو اُس مرحلے پر تمام انسانوں کو اس امر کی آگہی ہو چکی ہوگی کہ انہوں نے آخرت کے لیے کیا کمائی کر لی ہے [ما قدّمت] اور کیا کچھ فراموش کر دیا ہے۔ اس لیے اے انسانوں سوچو کہ تمہیں کس نے تمہارے محترم پروردگار کی جانب سے گمراہ کر رکھا ہے [غرّک] جسنے تمہیں تخلیق کیا، پھر تمہیں درست کرتے ہوئے ایک موزوں حالت میں لے آیا [سوّاک]، پھر تمہیں ایک صحیح جسامت عطا کی [عدلک] اور اس کے بعد تمہیں ارتقاء دے کر اُس صورت پر لے آیا جو اُس کی مشیت تھی۔ تو پھر ایسا نہیں ہونا چاہیئے تھا [کلّا] کہ تم اس کے تجویز کردہ نظام/ضابطے [الدّین] کی وثاقت کا انکار کرو [تُکذّب]، جبکہ تم پر لازمی تحفظات بھی مقرر کر دیے گئے ہیں۔ یہ نہایت معتبر پرچہ نویسوں کی مثل ہیں [کراما کاتبین] جو مستقلا یہ نگرانی کرتے ہیں کہ تم کیا کرتے ہو۔ یہ حقیقت ہے کہ راست باز [الابرار] بالآخر نعمتوں سے فیضیاب ہوں گے، اور یقینا بدکردار [الفجّار]محرومیوں اور پچھتاووں کی آگ میں ہوں گے [لفی جحیم] جہاں انہیں اُس وقت پہنچا دیا جائے گا جب الہامی ضابطے کے مکمل نفاذ کا دور آ جائیگا [یوم الدین]؛ اور اُس انجام سے وہ بچ کر نکل نہ پائیں گے۔ اور تمہیں کیا چیز یہ ادراک دے گی کہ الہامی ضابطے کے نفاذ کا دور کیا ہوتا ہے؟ پھر ایک بار زور دیا جاتا ہے کہ تمہیں کیسے ادراک ہوگا کہ وہ الہامی ضابطے کے نفاذ کا دور کیا نوعیت رکھتا ہوگا؟ یہ وہ دور ہوگا جب کوئی نفس بھی کسی دوسرے نفس پر کسی قسم کی حاکمیت نہیں جتلا سکے گا۔ اُس دور یا مرحلے میں تمام حاکمیت صرف اللہ تعالیٰ کے لیے ہی مخصوص ہوگی"۔
