PRELUDE
According to the Quran’s traditional interpretations, and their compliant translations, which swarm the global markets and libraries, Quranic Verse 2:102 refers to two angels named Haroot and Maroot who lived in the historic city of Babylon during the reign of King Solomon. They taught people the art of “sorcery” which was supposed to create rifts between “men and their wives”! In the entire related and inherited Muslim writings, the theory is seen unanimously maintained that those two angels always openly admitted that they were trouble-makers and people should not be “tempted towards Disbelief”, or “towards hiding the truth” by learning what they used to teach. But how weird is the subsequent assertion that people were still flocking to them to learn the magic that was believed to be harmful to their “family lives”!
Why would the two angels behave in this evil way, no clue is shown having been given in Quran by any of the corresponding translations we have inherited? What was the “Disbelief ( Kufr)” King Solomon was blamed to commit; no clarification is given in the exegeses and their compliant translations? If Sorcery or Magic was a field of acknowledged art in the ancient times, why has it not been developed and culminated into a full-fledged science, like all other fields of knowledge, in the present most progressive times, we have no answers? However, out of Quran stories are seen incorporated in the exegeses in an effort to make some sense out of
the seemingly frivolous and confusing theme of the Verse under probe. Deductive logic in matters relating to religion has hitherto been so rampant, as a matter of course, that any alternate rational re-translation was never attempted to ascertain the objective material reality of the main propositions of the theme – the main propositions being KUFR and SEHR (سحر- Magic)!
A brief summary of explanations given in different sources, trying to offer lame justification for the weird behavior of the two angels, is given in Wikipedia which, for the sake of saving lots of precious time shuffling through diverse writings, is copy/pasted below for Readers’ easy and prompt awareness:-

“The 14th century scholar Ibn Kathir interpreted the story of Harut and Marut and goes into depth about what exactly the angels had taught to the people of magic in his book, ‘Stories of the Qur'an’:
Narrated Al-`Ufi in his interpretation on the authority of Ibn `Abbas (May Allah be pleased with him) pertaining to Allah's Statement {They followed what the Shayatin (devils) gave out (falsely of the magic) in the lifetime of Sulaiman (Solomon). Sulaiman did not disbelieve, but the Shayatin (devils) disbelieved, teaching men magic and such things that came down at Babylon to the two angels, Harut and Marut but neither of these two (angels) taught anyone (such things) till they had said, "We are only for trial, so disbelieve not (by learning this magic from us).”...} When Sulaiman lost his kingdom, great numbers from among mankind and the jinn renegaded and followed their lusts. But, when Allah restored to Sulaiman his kingdom and the renegade came to follow the Straight Path once again, Sulaiman seized their holy scriptures which he buried underneath his throne. Shortly after, Sulaiman (Peace be upon him) died. In no time, the men and the Jinn uncovered the buried scriptures and said: This was a book revealed by Allah to Sulaiman who hide it from us. They took it as their religion and Allah the Almighty revealed His Saying: {And when there came to them a Messenger from Allah confirming what was with them, a party of those who were given the Scripture threw away the Book of Allah behind their backs as if they did not know!}. (Al-Baqarah, 101) and they followed what the devils gave out, i.e. musical instruments, play and all that blocks the remembrance of Allah.[5]
Critics about Harut and Marut
Some Islamic exegetes prefer to view Harut and Marut as ordinary men, than actual angels, who learned magic from devils, since their legend cannot be certainly attributed to Muhammed.
According to Muslim scholar Ansar Al-'Adl, many interpretations of the verse originate from alleged Judeo-Christian sources that came to be recorded in some works of Quranic exegesis, called Tafsir. Numerous stories have been transmitted about these verses, yet all center around the same basic story:
Abdullah Yusuf Ali, noted translator of the Qur'an into English, asserts that the source of this story may be the Jewish Midrash:
Among the Jewish traditions in the Midrash was a story of two angels who asked Allah's permission to come down to earth but succumbed to temptation, and were hung up by their feet at Babylon for punishment. Such stories about sinning angels who were cast down to punishment were believed in by the early Christians, also (see II Peter 2:4, and Epistle of Jude, verse 6).
According to Umm al-Qura University professor Abdul Aziz al-Harbi, Harut and Marut were merely human beings described with qualities often attributed to angels, rather than being actual angels.” (Quote ends)
As from the above lines we do not surmise any tangible comprehension of the confusing theme, we are obliged to infer that the Verse in question had also been made a target of distortion by misconstruing and mistranslating its highly meaningful content, along with the rest of the Quran. Let us then take up the matter and try our most rational style of a direct, strict and legal translation of the related Verse to discover the hidden truth of the divine injunction of the Quran on this issue.
Needless to mention that the Quran by its own claim is the most comprehensive and detailed Scripture which is free from doubts and ambiguities and doesn’t need any further clarification. It just needs an “honest and qualified” translation, free from vested interests and traditional influences, in order to expose its true essence in other languages. Regrettably, all available listed translations deemed authentic in the academic circles, have nothing to offer except compliance with the old despotic era exegeses.
Let us move ahead with our sacred mission of purifying the great Quran. For continuity’s sake, we may take a start from the earlier Verse No.2:100.
Verse No.2:100-101
أَوَكُلَّمَا عَاهَدُوا عَهْدًا نَّبَذَهُ فَرِيقٌ مِّنْهُم ۚبَلْ أَكْثَرُهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ ﴿١٠٠﴾ وَلَمَّا جَاءَهُمْ رَسُولٌ مِّنْ عِندِ اللَّـهِ مُصَدِّقٌ لِّمَا مَعَهُمْ نَبَذَ فَرِيقٌ مِّنَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ كِتَابَ اللَّـهِ وَرَاءَ ظُهُورِهِمْ كَأَنَّهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ ﴿١٠١﴾
Transliteration: “Aou kulla-ma ‘aahadu ‘ahdan nabadha-hu fareequm min-hum. Bal aktharu-hum la yu’minoon (100). Wa lamma ja’a-hum rasoolum min-‘indil-laahi, musaddiqan li-maa ma’a-hum nabadha fareequm min allazina ootu al-kitaaba Kitaaba-llahi waraa’a zuhuri-him ka-anna-hum la ya’lamoon(101).”
Old Traditionist Translation: “Is it ever so that when they make a covenant a party of them set it aside? The truth is, most of them believe not. And when there cometh unto them a messenger from Allah, confirming that which they possess, a party of those who have received the Scripture fling the Scripture of Allah behind their backs as if they knew not,
Translation: 2:100 “Is it not so that every time they made a commitment, a segment of them cast it aside? Rather, it is usually a majority of people that do not have faith at all.
2:101 And when a Messenger had come unto them from God, confirming the truth already in their possession, a segment of those who were granted revelation aforetime cast the divine writ behind their backs as though unaware of its teachings,”
Verse No.2:102-103
وَاتَّبَعُوا مَا تَتْلُو الشَّيَاطِينُ عَلَىٰ مُلْكِ سُلَيْمَانَ ۖ وَمَا كَفَرَ سُلَيْمَانُ وَلَـٰكِنَّ الشَّيَاطِينَ كَفَرُوا يُعَلِّمُونَ النَّاسَ السِّحْرَ وَمَا أُنزِلَ عَلَى الْمَلَكَيْنِ بِبَابِلَ هَارُوتَ وَمَارُوتَ ۚ وَمَا يُعَلِّمَانِ مِنْ أَحَدٍ حَتَّىٰ يَقُولَا إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ فِتْنَةٌ فَلَا تَكْفُرْ ۖ فَيَتَعَلَّمُونَ مِنْهُمَا مَا يُفَرِّقُونَ بِهِ بَيْنَ الْمَرْءِ وَزَوْجِهِ ۚ وَمَا هُم بِضَارِّينَ بِهِ مِنْ أَحَدٍ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ اللَّـهِ ۚوَيَتَعَلَّمُونَ مَا يَضُرُّهُمْ وَلَا يَنفَعُهُمْ ۚ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمُوا لَمَنِ اشْتَرَاهُ مَا لَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ مِنْ خَلَاقٍ ۚ وَلَبِئْسَ مَا شَرَوْا بِهِ أَنفُسَهُمْ ۚ لَوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ ﴿١٠٢﴾ وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ آمَنُوا وَاتَّقَوْا لَمَثُوبَةٌ مِّنْ عِندِ اللَّـهِ خَيْرٌ ۖ لَّوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ
Transliteration: “ Wa attabi’oo maa tatloo ash-shayateenu ‘alaa mulki Sulaiman. Wa maa kafara Sulaimanu wa laakinna ash-shayateena kafaroo yu’allimoona-ann-naasa as-sehra wa maa anzala ‘ala al-Malakayini bi-baabila Haroota wa Maroot. Wa maa yu’allimaani min ahadin hatta yaqulaa inna-ma nahnu fitnatun, fa-laa takfur. Fa-yata’allamoona min-huma maa
yufarriqoona bi-hi bayin al-marr’i wa zowji-hi. Wa maa hum bidhaarreena bi-hi min ahadin illa bi-idhnillah. Wa yata’allamoona ma yadhurru-hum wa laa yanfa’u-hum. Wa laqad ‘alimoo la-man-ishtarahu ma la-hu min Aakhirati min khalaaq. Wa labi’sa maa sharaou bi-hi anfusa-hum, laou kaanu ya’lamoon (102). Wa laou anna-hum aamanu wa attaqu la-mathubatan min ‘indillahi khayirun, laou kaanu ya’lamoon(103).”
Traditional Translation : “and follow [instead] that which the evil ones used to practice during Solomon's reign - for it was not Solomon who denied the truth, but those evil ones denied it by teaching people sorcery -; and [they follow] that which has come down through the two angels in Babylon, Hurut and Marut-although these two never taught it to anyone without first declaring, "We are but a temptation to evil: do not, then, deny [God's] truth!" And they learn from these two how to create discord between a man and his wife; but whereas they can harm none] shall have no share in the good of the life to come. For, vile indeed is that [art] for which they have sold their own selves -had they but known it! thereby save by God's leave, they acquire a knowledge that only harms themselves and does not benefit them - And surely they do know that he who trafficketh therein will have no (happy) portion in the Hereafter; and surely evil is the price for which they sell their souls, if they but knew. And if they had believed and kept from evil, a recompense from Allah would be better, if they only knew.”
The Most up to date Rational Translation:
2:102-103 “…and started following instead that which the rebellious ones(الشَّيَاطِينَ )used to practice (tatloo – تتلوا) during Solomon’s reign - for it was not Solomon who had denied the truth but those rebellious ones intentionally denied it (كَفَرُوا )by teaching people the art of deception and falsification of facts (السِّحْر ) and that which was cooked up in the minds (أُنزِلَ عَلَى ) of two powerful men (الْمَلَكَيْنِ ) in Babylon who were intent upon tearing open (haroot – هَارُوتَ ) and breaking apart (Maroot – مَارُوتَ ) the unity. And these two did not train anyone until they exposed their intentions by declaring that they were, in reality, intriguers (فِتْنَةٌ ) and they wanted them too not to hide this truth from people (فَلَا تَكْفُرْ ). Hence, people learned from those two the tactics of creating split between the powerful/beneficent leader (الْمَرْءِ) and those joining/following him (زَوْجِهِ). However, they were not to harm anyone with this policy of theirs because all changes take place as per the fixed laws of God (بِإِذْنِ اللَّـهِ ). So they learned what was to go against their own selves instead of bringing them a benefit. And they had learnt what was not to fetch a share for them in the Hereafter. Vile indeed was what they bought for them, had they but known it! And had they but believed and been circumspect, reward from God would indeed have brought them good – had they but known it!”
ha-Ra-Ta = to spear/slit/widen/impair, have a wide mouth, have wide sides of the mouth, tear up.
haaruut ( ہاروت) according to some is from harata and is a descriptive name meaning one who tore up, whilst maruut ( ماروت)comes from marata meaning he broke.

آخر وہ دونوں فرشتے اس عجیب انداز کا شر انگیز علم کیوں سکھایا کرتے تھے، کسی بھی متعلقہ ترجمے میں جو ہمیں وراثت میں ملے ہیں ہمیں اس سوال کا کوئی جواب نہیں ملتا۔ وہ کون سا "کفر" تھا جس کا الزام حضرت سلیمان پر لگایا گیا تھا، اس کی بھی کوئی وضاحت ہماری تفاسیر اور ان کے تابع تراجم میں نہیں کی گئی۔ اگر جادو قدیم زمانے میں ایک باوثوق علم تھا، جیسا کہ قرآن سے استنباط کیا جاتا ہے، تو آخر باقی علوم کی مانند اس علم کو بھی ترقی دے کر آج کے ارتقا یافتہ دو ر میں ایک مکمل سائنس کے قالب میں کیوں نہ ڈھال لیا گیا؟ اس کا بھی ہمارے پاس کوئی جواب نہیں ہے۔ تاہم ہماری تفاسیر خارج از قرآن کہانیوں سے بھری پڑی ہیں جو اس ظاہری طور پر فضول اور مبہم نظریے کا کچھ جواز دینے کی ایک کوشش ہے جو ہماری اس زیرِ تحقیق آیتِ مبارکہ سے بالعموم اخذ کیا جاتا رہا ہے۔ مذہبی معاملات میں استخراجی منطق کا استعمال ایک معمول کی مانند اتنا زیادہ غالب ہے کہ معاملے کے دونوں مرکزی قضایہ کی معروضی مادی حقیقتوں کو جاننے کے لیے کسی بھی نئے متبادل اور قرینِ عقل ترجمے کی کبھی کوشش ہی نہیں کی گئی۔ یاد رہے کہ وہ مرکزی مدعے یا قضایہ "کفر" اور "سحر" ہیں۔

کیونکہ مندرجہ بالا سطور کے مطالعے سے بھی اس واقعہ کا کوئی قرین عقل نتیجہ سامنے نہیں آتا، اس لیے ہم خود کو یہ تسلیم کر لینے پرمجبور پاتے ہیں کہ زیرِ تحقیق آیت کو بھی، بقایا قرآن کے ساتھ ساتھ، بگاڑ اور ملاوٹ کا ہدف بنایا گیا ہے، تاکہ اس کی معنی خیز حقیقت کو غلط استنباط اور غلط ترجمہ کے ذریعے نظروں سے غائب کر دیا جائے۔ تو پھر آئیے ہم خود اس معاملے کو اپنے ہاتھوں میں لیتے ہیں اور اپنے انتہائی قرین عقل انداز میں ایک بلا واسطہ، نہایت منضبط اور قانونی ترجمہ کرتے ہوئے متعلقہ آیت کا اب تک چھپایا گیا الہامی بیان اور اس کی حقیقت دریافت کرنے کی کوشش کرتے ہیں۔
یہ کہنے کی تو ضرورت ہی نہیں کہ قرآن اپنے ہی دعوے کے مطابق ایک انتہائی مفصل اور تشریح شدہ صحیفہ ہے جو ہر قسم کےشک و ابہام سے پاک ہے اور کسی بھی مزید انسانی وضاحت کا طلبگار نہیں ہے۔ اسے تو صرف ایک ایماندارانہ اور اہل ترجمہ کی ضرورت ہے جو کسی بھی پوشیدہ ایجنڈے اور روایاتی اثرات سے آزاد رہ کر کیا جائے تاکہ اس کی سچی روح کو دوسری زبانوں میں منتقل کر دیا جائے۔ افسوس کی بات یہ ہے کہ تمام دستیاب تراجم جو علمی حلقوں میں باوثوق سمجھے جاتے ہیں، سوائے بدکردارملوکیتی دور کی تفاسیر کی متابعت کرنےکے اور کچھ بھی پیش نہیں کرتے۔ تو آئیے ہم اپنے مقدس مشن کی جانب آگے بڑھتے ہیں جو قرآنِ عظیم کے معانی کو آلائشوں سے پاک کرنے کا واحد مقصد رکھتا ہے۔ تسلسل کی خاطر ہم دو آیات قبل سے، یعنی آیات نمبر 2/100 سے اپنی تحقیق شروع کرتے ہیں۔
آیت نمبر 2/100 :

ترجمہ:
"کیا ہمیشہ ایسا ہی نہیں ہوتا رہا ہے کہ جب انہوں نے کوئی عہد کیا، تو ان میں سے ایک نہ ایک گروہ نے اسے ضرور ہی بالا ئے طاق رکھ دیا؟ بلکہ ان میں سے اکثر ایسے ہی ہیں، جو سچے دل سے ایمان ہی نہیں لاتے۔ اور جب ان کے پاس اللہ کی طرف سے کوئی رسول اس کتاب کی تصدیق و تائید کرتا ہوا آیا جو ان کے ہاں پہلے سے موجود تھی، تو اِن اہل کتاب میں سے ایک گروہ نے کتاب اللہ کو اس طرح پس پشت ڈالا، گویا کہ وہ اس کی تعلیمات کے بارے میں کچھ جانتے ہی نہیں۔۔۔۔۔۔۔ "

وَاتَّبَعُوا مَا تَتْلُو الشَّيَاطِينُ عَلَىٰ مُلْكِ سُلَيْمَانَ ۖ وَمَا كَفَرَ سُلَيْمَانُ وَلَـٰكِنَّ الشَّيَاطِينَ كَفَرُوا يُعَلِّمُونَ النَّاسَ السِّحْرَ وَمَا أُنزِلَ عَلَى الْمَلَكَيْنِ بِبَابِلَ هَارُوتَ وَمَارُوتَ ۚ وَمَا يُعَلِّمَانِ مِنْ أَحَدٍ حَتَّىٰ يَقُولَا إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ فِتْنَةٌ فَلَا تَكْفُرْ ۖ فَيَتَعَلَّمُونَ مِنْهُمَا مَا يُفَرِّقُونَ بِهِ بَيْنَ الْمَرْءِ وَزَوْجِهِ ۚ وَمَا هُم بِضَارِّينَ بِهِ مِنْ أَحَدٍ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ اللَّـهِ ۚوَيَتَعَلَّمُونَ مَا يَضُرُّهُمْ وَلَا يَنفَعُهُمْ ۚ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمُوا لَمَنِ اشْتَرَاهُ مَا لَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ مِنْ خَلَاقٍ ۚ وَلَبِئْسَ مَا شَرَوْا بِهِ أَنفُسَهُمْ ۚ لَوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ ﴿١٠٢﴾ وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ آمَنُوا وَاتَّقَوْا لَمَثُوبَةٌ مِّنْ عِندِ اللَّـهِ خَيْرٌ ۖ لَّوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ[۱۰۳] ۔
روایتی ترجمہ :
"۔۔۔۔۔۔اور لگے اُن چیزوں کی پیروی کرنے، جو شیا طین ، سلیمانؑ کی سلطنت کا نام لے کر پیش کیا کرتے تھے، حالانکہ سلیمانؑ نے کبھی کفر نہیں کیا، کفر کے مرتکب تو وہ شیاطین تھے جو لوگوں کو جادو گری کی تعلیم دیتے تھے وہ پیچھے پڑے اُس چیز کے جو بابل میں دو فرشتوں، ہاروت و ماروت پر نازل کی گئی تھی، حالانکہ وہ (فرشتے) جب بھی کسی کو اس کی تعلیم دیتے تھے، تو پہلے صاف طور پر متنبہ کر دیا کرتے تھے کہ "دیکھ، ہم محض ایک آزمائش ہیں، تو کفر میں مبتلا نہ ہو" پھر بھی یہ لوگ اُن سے وہ چیز سیکھتے تھے، جس سے شوہر اور بیوی میں جدائی ڈال دیں ظاہر تھا کہ اذنِ الٰہی کے بغیر وہ اس ذریعے سے کسی کو بھی ضرر نہ پہنچا سکتے تھے، مگراس کے باوجود وہ ایسی چیز سیکھتے تھے جو خود ان کے لیے نفع بخش نہیں، بلکہ نقصان د ہ تھی اور انہیں خوب معلوم تھا کہ جو اس چیز کا خریدار بنا، اس کے لیے آخرت میں کوئی حصہ نہیں کتنی بری متاع تھی جس کے بدلے انہوں نے اپنی جانوں کو بیچ ڈالا، کاش انہیں معلوم ہوتا! اگر وہ ایمان اور تقویٰ اختیار کرتے، تو اللہ کے ہاں اس کا جو بدلہ ملتا، وہ ان کے لیے زیادہ بہتر تھا، کاش اُنہیں خبر ہوتی۔

"۔۔۔۔۔ اور وہ اُن چیزوں کی پیروی کرنے لگ گئے جن کا پروپیگنڈا کچھ سرکش لوگ [الشَّيَاطِينُ] حضرت سلیمان کی حکومت کے خلاف کر رہے تھے [عَلَىٰ مُلْكِ سُلَيْمَانَ ]۔ اور یہ حضرت سلیمان نہیں تھے جو ایمان کےراستے سے ہٹ گئےتھے، بلکہ یہ وہ سرکش لوگ [الشَّيَاطِينَ ] تھے جو جانتے بوجھتے سچائی کو پوشیدہ کر رہے تھے [كَفَرُوا]۔ پس اس مقصد کے لیے وہ لوگوں کو دھوکا دہی اور حقیقتوں کو جھوٹ میں بدلنے کے فن [السِّحْرَ] کی تعلیم دیتے تھے، اور یہ وہی لائن تھی جو بابل شہر میں دو طاقتور لوگوں [الْمَلَكَيْنِ] کے ذہن میں تیار کی گئی تھی [أُنزِلَ عَلَى ] جو تفرقے [هَارُوتَ] اور قومی وحدت کو پارا پارا کرنے [مَارُوتَ ] پر تُلے ہوئے تھے۔ اور وہ کسی کو اُس وقت تک اپنی لائن کی ٹرینینگ نہیں دیتے تھے [وَمَا يُعَلِّمَانِ ] جب تک اپنے ارادے یہ کہ کر ظاہر نہیں کر دیتے تھے کہ وہ تو فتنہ پیدا کرنے کا مقصد رکھتے ہیں، اور وہ لوگوں سے کہتے تھے کہ تم کو بھی یہ حقیقت چھپانے کی ضرورت نہیں ہے [فَلَا تَكْفُرْ] ۔ پس لوگ ان دونوں سے ایک طاقتور اور مہربان لیڈر [الْمَرْءِ] اور اس کے ساتھیوں/پیروکاروں [زَوْجِهِ ] کے درمیان افتراق پیدا کرنے [يُفَرِّقُونَ] کی سیاست سیکھتے تھے۔ تاہم وہ اس روش سے کسی کو ضرر نہیں پہنچا سکتے تھے کیونکہ تمام تبدیلیاں اللہ تعالیٰ کے مقرر کردہ قوانین کے تحت ہی [بِإِذْنِ اللَّـهِ ] پیدا ہوتی ہیں۔ پس وہ ایسا علم حاصہل کرتے تھے جو انہی کے مفادات کے خلاف جاتا تھا بجائے اس کے کہ کوئی منفعت پیدا کرتا۔ اور انہوں نے جو سیکھا تھا اس کے ذریعے وہ آخرت کی زندگی میں اپنے لیے کوئی حصہ حاصل نہیں کر سکتے تھے۔ کیسا بے سود سودا تھا جو انہوں نے اپنے لیے خریدا، کاش کہ وہ جان لیتے۔ اور اگروہ ایمان مضبوط رکھتےاور پرہیزگاری اختیار کرتے، اللہ کا انعام ضرور ان کے حق میں باعث خیر ہوتا، کاش کہ وہ یہ بھی جان لیتے۔"
